An English-style kitchen is full of warmth and charm.

The resurgence of the English-style kitchen design trend is a welcome return for this classic, welcoming, almost timeless aesthetic. Much-loved by anyone who wants to stamp their personality on their kitchen, this look is surprisingly easy to achieve, even if you only have a small kitchen — or a small budget.

What Defines an English-Style Kitchen?

An English country kitchen evokes a comfortable, lived-in feeling. It’s elegant but also functional. A high-end English kitchen is classical and slightly more formal, but for most people, it’s the rustic, charming English cottage-style they are thinking of when they hear this phrase.

The key elements of this aesthetic are:

  • A focus on craftsmanship
  • Natural materials
  • Practical, freestanding pieces
  • An “unfitted” feel
  • Earthy or muted colors

Think of it as prioritizing longevity and tradition over modern, high-gloss vibes. The idea is to make it feel as though generations have cooked and gathered in the same homely space.

An English-style kitchen uses warm color tones.

How to Style an English Country Kitchen

There are five key steps to styling this look. If you are renovating your whole room, you can follow all of them. If you’re just trying to update your kitchen vibe, think about which of these steps might give you a hint of the feel you’re aiming for.

1. Start With a Warm, Natural Color Palette

The entire point of an English-style kitchen is that it should feel welcoming. For this, warm colors are ideal. Earthy terracotta, sage green or dusky blue create an inviting space that people like to spend time in. Buttermilk yellows and warm neutrals are also good choices. Keep the tones muted and nature-inspired rather than bright or garish.

If you’re not used to colorful kitchens, you could keep a warm cream as a base and just add pops of color through accessories or a painted kitchen island.

2. Choose Quality, Crafted Cabinetry

Cabinetry is a huge feature in an English country kitchen. Aim for high-quality, durable hardwood, such as oak, walnut or birch. Cabinets can be hand-painted in the dusky tones from your palette, or left clear-finished wood.

The 18th-century shaker style is the most commonly used, with doors sitting flush within the frame in an echo of timeless joinery skill. Clean lines and recessed panels are paired with exposed hinges and brass or polished metal handles.

Kitchen cabinetry should be durable and made with quality craftsmanship.

3. Select Durable, Timeless Countertops, Flooring and Appliances

The focus on natural materials is a big thing here. Consider wood, marble or soapstone for your countertops — durable, easy to care for and environmentally friendly too. For flooring, natural stone or wood is preferred, but you can get the same look with luxury vinyl tile or luxury vinyl planks, ceramic tile or stone- or wood-look laminate.

For appliances and fixtures, a classic Aga or range-style cooker is perfect for an English cottage-style kitchen aesthetic. Belfast or Butler sinks also give that vibe and can stand out as a key element of the look.

4. Mix in Freestanding Furniture

This is absolutely crucial — arguably, the signature of the English-style kitchen is that it doesn’t look fitted. A Welsh dresser is a go-to addition. Although these beautiful freestanding pieces of furniture today conjure up images of a humble, rustic kitchen, the original medieval versions were very high-status objects found only in the very grandest of homes.

As well as or instead of a dresser, you might choose a butcher block island, a stand-alone pantry, a hanging pot rack or some Windsor chairs with comfy seat pads.

Freestanding furniture and open shelving is a hallmark of the English country kitchen aesthetic.

5. Layer With Textiles and Decor

Fabrics and textiles are where you can really add some personality and charm. You could use patterned fabrics for curtains or seat cushions, perhaps in florals, gingham or checks. Cafe curtains are a popular and easy-to-install choice, with the added benefit that they let in light from the uncovered half of the window.

For decor, choose open shelving or plate racks to house mismatched crockery displays and cherished heirloom items. Add vintage-style hardware to complete the look.

How to Get an English-Style Kitchen in a Small Space

If your kitchen is spatially challenged, don’t worry, you can still capture the spirit of this design choice.

  • Use clever storage: Wall shelves fit right in with this aesthetic, so think vertical where floor space is tight.
  • Get mobile: A small, movable kitchen cart takes up much less space than a fixed island but can still add to the look.
  • Use lighter colors: A paler and slightly brighter color scheme can open up the space and make it feel larger.
  • Focus on key elements: A statement sink or a rustic chair can capture the style’s essence without needing extra room or overwhelming a small space.
You can create a charming, vintage look on a budget.

Creating an English Cottage-Style Kitchen on a Budget

Leaning fully into the English country kitchen vibe can be expensive, given the focus on craftsmanship and high-quality, durable, natural materials. However, there are ways to get the core of the look without breaking the bank.

  • Cabinets: Rather than replacing existing cabinets, paint them in the muted earthy tones that speak to this vibe. Before painting, sand and seal them, then after painting, update the hardware to black or brass knobs or pulls.
  • Fabric: If your existing cabinet doors are not in good shape, consider fabric skirts instead of doors — cheap and effective, and very in tune with the rustic, vintage vibe of the English-style kitchen.
  • Worktops: Opt for affordable butcher block countertops. Concrete is another budget-friendly alternative that sticks with the rustic look.
  • Thrifted elements: Secondhand dining tables, chests of drawers or dressers are often cheap to buy and genuinely vintage.
  • Storage: Use reclaimed or salvaged wood for open shelving or create a hanging pot rack from inexpensive plumbing pipes.

A Timeless Choice for Your Home

The English-style kitchen trend is more than a one-minute wonder — it’s an aesthetic that keeps coming back into style, and for good reason. Who doesn’t want a warm, functional heart of the home that is beautiful to cook in and welcoming for friends and family? Ample display areas let you showcase your personality through your decor, while the plentiful storage is deeply practical, too. Enjoy creating an English-style kitchen that’s perfect for you.
