If your room layout has stayed static for years, you may start to become bored with your home’s design. While a new coat of paint, new furniture or funky art installations may very well give you the new look you crave, there are cheaper ways to switch things up at home. Rearranging furniture can give your interior a fresh look without spending a dime.

Here are seven ways you can change up your room layout and refresh your home — at almost no cost to you.

1. Deep Clean

If you leave your furniture in the same position month after month, dust and debris collect under and behind it. If you want to thoroughly clean, pull out and move furniture. Even if you wind up putting it back in the same location, you’ll have a chance to do a deep cleaning and reduce the dust and allergens in your home.

Enjoying a fresh, clean room can help even your regular room layout feel brighter and more welcoming. There’s something to be said for the peace of mind a good deep clean can bring.

2. Make More Room

The way you organize your furniture can make a big difference in how functional your space is. If you’re in a small apartment, for example, you’ll find that placing furniture closer to the wall rather than out in the middle of the room makes the space seem larger.

Move pieces around in different combinations until you find the one that’s functional but space saving. Think about the way foot traffic flows through your home, and rearrange your furniture accordingly.

For instance, I once found that moving my loveseat from the center of one of my small apartments to the wall really opened the room up. With this new room layout, I had space I hadn’t imagined before to expand my tiny kitchen with a little island cart. You might not always know what’s going to work until you try it.

3. Take Advantage of Seasonal Lighting

As the seasons change, the way the light shines into your home may change as well. Having your television stand across from the window may not work if there’s suddenly a glare at the time of day you’re trying to relax and watch your favorite show. You might also want to move a breakfast table closer to a window to take advantage of waning natural light.

4. Declutter by Removing Old Pieces

Another reason to rearrange your furniture is to see what pieces need to go. The longer you live in an apartment or home, the more stuff you’ll collect. The coffee table you couldn’t live without might suddenly take over your entire living room.

Take a close look at the different pieces of furniture you own, and figure out if you can sell or donate any to make more space in your home.

This especially holds true if your design tastes have evolved since you first moved in. Does that chair you had all throughout college stick out like a sore thumb in your new room layout? Is your floral-patterned rug not matching your new minimalist aesthetic? Don’t be afraid to cut your emotional ties to these items and find them a new home.

5. Make Room for Something New

Once you purge items you have little use for, you can refresh your home with a fun new piece or two. Have you always wanted a gossip bench and finally found the perfect one? Any time you buy a new piece of furniture is a good time to figure out what you want to keep and what needs to go. Your room layout can only accommodate so much furniture, after all.

6. Protect Your Floors

Heavy pieces of furniture can leave permanent marks on floors. Even if you have carpet, heavy furniture can leave dents. If you rearrange your furniture regularly, you reduce the flaws and divets caused by it. Of course, you’ll also want to take advantage of moving the furniture to put protectors on the legs of it and minimize further damage.

This is especially important if you’re renting an apartment. If you’re lucky enough to land a rental with hardwood floors, don’t give your landlord reason to deduct from your security deposit. Switching up your room layout can not only refresh your home in this case, but save you money down the road.

7. Free up Electrical Outlets

Is your home arranged in a way that means nearly all the electronics are on a single outlet? If you have multiple power strips, it’s time to rethink how you have things set up in your home. While items like DVD players need to stay close to the television, you can certainly put your WiFi in a different location.

Think through the different ways you use various appliances and electronics in your home and how you might better arrange them for function and safety.

Rearrange Your Room Layout

The number one reason you should rearrange your furniture is simply to make a change. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and keep the same layout year after year. While there isn’t anything wrong with that, there also isn’t anything exciting about it. Give a new room layout a try and enjoy the effects of a refreshed design.
