Renters young and old need to be safe while they’re making a property their home. If you’re looking to put down roots, you should be considering how high crime rates could affect your family. However, it’s a crucial factor to think about for your own health and possessions regardless of any kids or roommates.

When you’re looking for a place to rent, it’s essential to find a secure place to live. Here are some of the safest cities in the U.S. you can browse for apartments or houses in today.

1. Broadview Heights, Ohio

Compared to other cities of similar size, Broadview Heights is lower than most of the country. It has a nearly perfect safety rating — almost one in 1,000 people living here will be a victim of a crime. For a city, that’s an incredible statistic. Data shows Broadview Heights is 97% safer than other cities nationwide.

If you’re looking for a promising place to live, this city has you covered. Make a stop at hotspots like The Boneyard and The Dark Room as you join the safe nightlife scene in Broadview Heights.

2. Franklin, Massachusetts

Up in New England, Franklin is one of the safest cities in the U.S. While the whole country has about 30 crimes per square mile, this city has just two. Franklin maintains a town-like feel, but over 30,000 people are living there today.

When you look at the population size compared to the crime rate, you can see how safe the city is. For a calm day out of your apartment, visit Fairmount Fruit Farm or GlenPharmer Distillery. Living in Franklin might also make you a New England Patriots fan — the massive Gillette Stadium is just a short drive away.

An apartment wall covered in tons of brightly colored artwork. A large green plant covers almost all of the window. There is a blue couch with a gray dog sitting on it and pink flowers in a vase.

3. Long Beach, New York

Many people think of New York when looking to rent, but the bigger city might come with a higher crime rate. If you’re looking for a much calmer city, take a look at Long Beach. This city boasts high rankings for violent and property crime safety. That means there’s not a very high chance you’ll experience one of these crimes while you’re a resident.

As the name suggests, there are plenty of beaches here for you to enjoy. With that comes the many delicacies vendors and restaurants offer to visitors and renters alike. Pick up a book from the local library or learn how to ride the waves at Skudin Surf.

4. Weirton, West Virginia

Weirton’s city officials recently spoke about their happiness at being the safest city in West Virginia. The local newspaper quoted Mayor Harold Miller as saying that secure cities are the most appealing — and he’s not wrong. With an impressively low crime score of .49, Weirton could become the home of your new apartment.

Though it’s one of the smaller cities on this list, there’s still plenty to do in Weirton, West Virginia. Be sure you stop by the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center. Those who are more into sports can become regulars at the Williams Country Club or Steel Valley Bowling Center.

5. Rexburg, Idaho

City representatives believe Rexburg’s sense of community lends itself to low crime rates. Councilwoman Tisha Flora says it’s the great people that make Rexburg one of the safest cities in the U.S. Even as a college town, the councilwoman thinks it’s one of the best places to raise kids. For adults, that means you know you’ll be living in a great place when you rent here.

Rexburg offers a lot for nature lovers. Yellowstone Bear World is just 5 miles away, so you can take a mini solo trip or load up the car with friends for a gorgeous day out. There’s also a drive-in movie theater, nature park, ropes course and even a water park nearby. If you’re looking for a safe place with a lot to do, Rexburg has a lot to see.
