Decorating a house is a chance to showcase your personality. Yet, it can feel a little overwhelming with all the different choices. So, take time to figure out your ideal design theme. Here are a few tips to help you find your home decor style.

1. Look at Design Magazines

Browsing through magazines is a great way to get an idea of what you like. You can get inspiration from the various styles you see. Also, it’s faster to flip through pages than scroll through images on the internet. You can even then tear out different sections and collect the photos.

Then you have something to compare to when you’re picking out decor. See if you can find a specific pattern among the pictures. For example, maybe they all have a common design or color. Popular magazines include Architectural Digest and Elle Decor.

2. Try Online Quizzes

This is a simple way to find your home decor style. You can google the topic and find various options from sites including HGTV and Decorist. Take different quizzes to see if you keep getting similar results. They can also be a fun way to destress after a long workday.

Plus, you can include similar features from the quizzes within your space. Take note of the answers you get and any pictures that stand out to you. Then once you find your style, you can start shopping, which is the fun part!

3. Pursue Your Wardrobe

This may seem like an odd way to find your home decor style. However, it can give you an idea of the type of textures and colors you already like. For example, do you have a lot of blue pieces of clothing? Then maybe you can use that hue on the walls or within accent pillows and rugs.

Also, look at if your clothing is more neutral or has patterns. Suppose your closet is full of bold designs and textures. You might want to incorporate this theme into your space. For example, you could have floral or striped curtains in your living room.

4. Examine the Exterior of Homes

When you drive around, notice if any properties draw your attention. These can give you an idea of what style you like. Are they more traditionally styled with bricks or modern with vinyl? You’ll also like houses with clean lines if you enjoy contemporary designs.

You can also use your friend’s and extended families’ residences to get inspiration. See how they decorated their outdoor space if you’re looking to increase your curb appeal. Remember, the exterior is just as important as the interior.

5. Review Your Current Decor

Take a walk through your house and note the types of furniture, artwork and fixtures. Write down details about their color and materials. Keep track of things you want to replace and the things you like.

Then compare the items you like and find patterns. What do they have in common in terms of design? You will want to keep this list in a safe and easily accessible place. You can bring it every time you run to the store.

6. Create a Pinterest Board

You could probably spend hours scrolling through Pinterest. It can give you plenty of design samples and fun images to look at. So, to keep all your favorite styles in one place, create a Pinterest board.

Add any images that speak to you to your collection. You can even continue adding things over time. Maybe take time each night to scroll through the site. Then take a picture or print out the board to reference when at the store.

7. Start With an “Anchor” Piece

Find one thing that can be a centerpiece, such as a bowl, lamp or photo frame. Another idea is a smaller chair or sofa. Any object you love and shows off your personality. Then use it as your design anchor.

Match the rest of your pieces with that one. For example, what are the primary colors of the anchor item? Try to incorporate these in your other features, such as rugs or pillows. If the anchor object is made from wood, use that material in another decor, such as chairs.

8. Design a Smaller Space First

Find a smaller area in your area, such as an end table or your bedroom dresser. Then style it with items, such as artwork and plants. Let it stay that way for a few days and see how you like it long-term.

Change it up, if you get tired of it after a few days. Suppose you still enjoy the space. Then incorporate similar features into the rest of your residence. Keep in mind starting small can feel less intimidating than decorating the whole house. It can also prevent making multiple changes down the road.
